From ancient times, humanity has been fascinated by gems and jewels. Across cultures and civilizations, gemstones have been regarded not merely as ornaments, but as carriers of subtle natural forces.
Within the Vedic tradition, gemstones are understood as natural conductors of planetary energies. When properly selected, examined, and purified, they are believed to support balance in human life.
However, classical texts emphasize that gemstones must first be inspected, judged astrologically, verified for authenticity, and purified according to traditional methods before being worn.
The Hindu Puranas frequently refer to the Kalpa Vruksha, the divine wish-fulfilling tree. Symbolically, it is said to have been formed from precious gems, which is why gems are often associated with fulfillment and prosperity.
Ancient Rishis developed various remedies for human challenges, including meditation, worship, ritual observances and spiritual disciplines. While these require long-term dedication, gemology texts describe gemstones as a supportive method when prescribed correctly.
One classical narrative speaks of the noble king Vali. According to legend, when he was struck during a sacrificial ritual, his body transformed into various precious gemstones which were scattered across the earth.
Different deities became symbolically associated with specific stones:
The earth is therefore referred to as Ratnagarbha (womb of jewels), and the oceans as Ratnakar (mine of jewels), as gemstones are found in mountains, rivers and mineral deposits.
Classical philosophy teaches that the human body is composed of five elements. Gemstones too are formed from natural mineral compositions within the earth. Because of this elemental similarity, traditional gemology considers gemstones capable of interacting subtly with the human system when properly prescribed.
Not every gemstone suits every individual. Incorrect selection may produce imbalance. Authenticity and natural origin are essential. Therefore gemstones should never be worn based solely on general information.
A proper Vedic consultation is required before wearing any gemstone.
